Firm History

1932

Clarence W. Miles opens a new law practice with A. Seymour O’Brien at 10 Light Street, Baltimore, Maryland.

1953

The law firm of Miles, Walsh, O’Brien & Morris merges with Mullikin, Stockbridge & Waters to create the new firm of “Miles & Stockbridge.” In the fall of that year, Clarence W. Miles leads the effort with Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro to bring the St. Louis Browns baseball franchise to Baltimore. Clarence W. Miles became the first President of the new Baltimore Orioles.

1955

Clarence Miles becomes the first President of the Greater Baltimore Committee, which brought together the Baltimore business community and the Baltimore City government to spearhead urban renewal.

1962

Clarence Miles joins other civic leaders to create Baltimore’s first “open” private club known as “The Center Club,” which had no racial or religious barriers. Miles was its first President.

1963

Clarence Miles is appointed by J. Miller Tawes to head the Cambridge Coalition Committee to resolve civil rights protests in Cambridge, Maryland.

1966

Partner Harrison L. Winter is appointed by President Johnson to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals after having served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. Judge Winter later becomes Chief Judge of the Fourth Circuit.

1968

The first regional office of Miles & Stockbridge opens in Towson, Maryland.

1970

Partner Robert L. Karwacki becomes President of the Baltimore City School Board and leads the Board during the desegregation of the Baltimore City Schools.

1974

Lowell R. Bowen becomes Managing Partner of Miles & Stockbridge and leads the firm through almost 20 years of growth and expansion.

1975

George Beall joins Miles & Stockbridge after having served as U.S. Attorney for Maryland in charge of the investigation into the prosecution of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew.

1977

Harry R. Hughes joins the firm as a partner after having served as Secretary of Transportation under Governor Marvin Mandel. Hughes goes on to be elected the 57th Governor of Maryland in 1978.

1978

Miles & Stockbridge opens a regional office in Easton, Maryland.

1982

The Rockville, Maryland, office of Miles & Stockbridge opens.

1987

The Frederick, Maryland, office of Miles & Stockbridge opens.

1995

Miles & Stockbridge establishes the “Miles & Stockbridge Minority Scholarship” at the University Of Maryland School Of Law.

Miles & Stockbridge opens its Tysons Corner, Virginia, regional office.

2003

Principal Richard D. Bennett is appointed by President George W. Bush to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

2004

A formal Diversity Committee is established by the Board of Directors to aggressively address diversities in gender, race, and sexual orientation in the firm.

2010

Miles & Stockbridge opens its new Washington, D.C., office.

2013

Miles & Stockbridge moves from 10 Light Street to the architecturally modern offices at 100 Light Street in Baltimore.

2018

Nancy Greene becomes the first female Chairman of Miles & Stockbridge.

2019

The Richmond, Virginia, office of Miles & Stockbridge opens.

2024

Miles & Stockbridge opens its new office in New York, New York.

Miles & Stockbridge merges with Krooth & Altman, a national real estate finance law firm.

2025

The North Bethesda, Maryland, office of Miles & Stockbridge opens.
