This Black History Month, we are pleased to highlight Camille Radford, legal recruiting coordinator in the firm’s Baltimore office. Camille, who says the passage of the CROWN Act of 2020 in Maryland allowed her to wear her natural hair without fear of persecution and discrimination, explains the power and influence of the arts on race and identity issues.

“Whether through spoken word, poetry or visual arts, art can help us understand the experiences of others and how they perceive society. It can also shed light on the systemic issues that affect us all. Even comedy can draw attention to painful situations of race and identity for a wider audience. Throughout history, music has proven to be a powerful tool for sending messages and inspiring people. An anthem or a message put to a rhythm can stir up emotions and bring people together.

“I use poetry to express my experiences with race and my agency. By sharing my work, I want to show people who look like me that their voices and perspectives matter.”
