Black History Month Spotlight: Elisha Williams

This Black History Month, we are pleased to highlight Elisha Williams, a legal practice assistant in our 1850 M Street office in Washington. Elisha, who takes her 3-year-old daughter to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington for its books and interactive displays showcasing the contributions of African American culture, explains how music has shaped her outlook on life.

“Soulful music has always been uplifting and inspiring in my home. My parents would play Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, you name it. We would sing and dance while cleaning, cooking or traveling. Sometimes that music got us through whatever we might have been dealing with. It taught me to never forget where you come from and always be kind to others and keep your integrity as a Black woman.

“What was once considered ‘Black’ music is now, of course, widely popular and loved. That’s why Black History Month is a good reminder and acknowledgment of the richness of our culture and history, how we’ve paved the way for so many, no matter their race.”
