Jim Shoemaker leads a dynamic, cross-functional team supporting the firm’s lawyers, staff and clients through every phase of the client-engagement lifecycle.
With a passion for modernizing the practice of law, Jim drives initiatives to optimize internal operations, enhance financial performance, and innovate service delivery models. His team —composed of non-practicing lawyers and allied business professionals — is committed to delivering client value while elevating operational efficiency.
Legal Operations plays a pivotal role in new-business intake, conflicts management, pricing and matter management, practice management, legal technology solutions (including eDiscovery) and research. The team ensures that every operational aspect of the firm reflects a client-first philosophy and is designed for maximum impact.
In addition to his operational leadership, Jim spearheads the Miles & Stockbridge's AI initiatives, positioning the firm at the forefront of legal technology innovation. Under his guidance, the firm’s AI-first approach is transforming how legal services are delivered, blending cutting-edge tools with the firm’s long-standing commitment to excellence.
Jim received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and participated in Harvard Law School’s Leadership in Law Firms program. He is an accredited legal pricing professional with a specialized background in electronic discovery, recognized for his ability to strike the balance between the demands of legal practice and the imperatives of business performance.
