It’s a naturally occurring material. When handled in ways that generate substantial amounts of inhalable dust over extended periods of time, exposure to it has been associated with respiratory health problems including asthma and even cancer.

Some plaintiffs’ lawyers claim one rare form of cancer is a “signature” disease for exposure to it. The United States Occupational Safety & Health Administration has recognized one of its chemically complex by-products as a known carcinogen.
