Cybercrime is no longer limited to petty criminals stealing credit cards and social security numbers or hackers holding your computer hostage with malware and ransomware. Cybercriminals are developing and utilizing a vast array of advanced weapons and tactics to target stored and transmitted personal and confidential information, with the offenders including organized crime and sovereign nation states. Law firms and their clients are particularly tempting targets for these active modern threats and should be aware of the developing legal framework addressing data security, with many of the new and proposed laws creating potentially significant liabilities for noncompliance with the imposed data security standards.
