Unless someone has been living in a vacuum (pardon the dust-related pun), OSHA’s effort to address respirable crystalline silica has been something widely anticipated and prepared for by many in the industry. It is common knowledge that OSHA has a fundamental mandate to have all employers provide employees with a workplace free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Employees exposed to respirable crystalline silica have been determined to be at increased risk of developing serious adverse health effects, including silicosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and kidney disease.
