Appellate
A trial-court judgment is not the end of the case. It often is just the beginning.
Appeals can alter, or even upend, trial-court outcomes. However, prosecuting and defending appeals can require a skill set that may be different from what is needed in the trial court. Clear writing, sophisticated legal analysis, and a deep understanding of appellate courts are paramount. As is a working knowledge of appellate procedure—a minefield of rules that can end an appeal before it even begins. Without those capabilities, a party risks having a victory at trial turn into a defeat on appeal.
At Miles & Stockbridge, experienced lawyers guide clients through even the most complicated appeals. They are experienced in all levels of state and federal courts, up to and including the United States Supreme Court. They assist our trial lawyers in identifying appellate issues early in the case, preserving those issues for appeal, navigating through appellate rules of procedure, developing powerful appellate arguments, and presenting those arguments to appellate courts.
