Biography
John Vihstadt partners with lenders in market-rate and complex affordable multifamily and health care facility financings involving HUD, FHA and Ginnie Mae, including new construction loans, acquisitions, refinancings, workouts/restructurings, assignments, tax-exempt and taxable bond projects low-income, historic and new markets tax credits, as well as post-closing servicing and asset management matters.
He is an active member of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) and serves on the MBA’s Insured Projects Committee. A frequent speaker and panelist at national and regional mortgage banking and housing finance conferences. John co-led the industry response to HUD’s revamped loan closing documents from 2009-2011, and currently serves as Co-Vice Chair of the MBA’s national closing committee.
Before joining Krooth & Altman in 1989, John served three years as executive assistant to the president of the Government National Mortgage Association in the Reagan Administration. From 1981 to 1985, he worked for the Select Committee on Aging in the U.S. House of Representatives.
John leveraged over 30 years of deep civic engagement in Arlington, Virginia, to win a seat on the Arlington County Board and served from 2014-2018, during which time he also served on the Board of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACO) and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC).
John received his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Nebraska. He is a member of the bar in the District of Columbia, Nebraska and Iowa.
