Miles & Stockbridge is pleased to announce that Joseph Hovermill, a senior member the firm’s Products Liability and Mass Torts Practice Group and president emeritus of the firm, has earned The Daily Record’s Leadership in Law honor.

The Daily Record launched Leadership in Law in 2001 to recognize Maryland’s legal professionals—lawyers and judges—whose dedication to their occupation and to their communities is outstanding. In addition, The Daily Record also awarded its Generation J.D. honor for up-and-coming legal professionals to Nicole Whitecar, an associate in the firm’s Labor, Employment, Benefits & Immigration Practice Group. Winners for both honors were selected by an outside panel of legal and business leaders.

Hovermill became president emeritus in 2021 after serving six years as president of the firm with the last three years in the dual role of president and chief executive officer. He continues to serve on the firm’s board of directors—a role he has filled with dedication for a decade—and has returned to his practice full time.

Until assuming his firm-wide leadership position in 2014, Hovermill chaired the firm's Products Liability and Mass Torts Practice Group. He is a “go to” lawyer, principal and complex case litigator whose practice focuses on the defense of manufacturers in a variety of complex product liability, toxic tort and environmental litigation regionally and nationally. He supervises the management of mass tort, product liability and other multi-party litigation nationally for several leading manufacturing clients, developing and implementing coordinated litigation strategies to control or eliminate the significant exposure posed by such claims. Among his recent cases, Joe achieved a history-making trial win for a large manufacturing client in an enforcement action brought by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

He also litigates and tries complicated environmental disputes involving other companies, states and municipalities, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Justice. He is part of the firm’s insurance coverage practice and has extensive experience in locating and securing legacy insurance coverage to cover the cost and risk of the matters he defends for them.

Hovermill and Whitecar were honored during an online celebration on June 17. Click here to read their profiles in a special magazine inserted into the June 18 issue of The Daily Record and online at TheDailyRecord.com. (Login may be required.)
