Miles & Stockbridge Expands Richmond Office with Addition of Veteran Tax Lawyer Stephanie Lipinski Galland and Seasoned Litigator Carl Schwertz
Law firm positioned for substantial growth in Richmond market with new managing principal and new downtown location
Miles & Stockbridge, an AmLaw 200 law firm in the mid-Atlantic region, is pleased to announce that veteran state and local tax lawyer Stephanie Lipinski Galland and seasoned litigator Carl R. Schwertz have joined the Richmond office. Both lawyers joined the firm as it moves to a new 11,000-square-foot space on the ninth floor of the West Tower of Riverfront Plaza and more than doubles its office footprint.
Lipinkski Galland is a principal in the Corporate & Securities Practice. She brings more than 30 years of experience in representing businesses before state and local taxing authorities in income, franchise and sales controversies, among other matters, to her new role. She was previously a partner with Williams Mullen.
Schwertz returns to Miles & Stockbridge as of counsel in the Litigation Practice. A litigator and trial attorney with more than 35 years of experience, Schwertz was previously with the firm from 2010 to 2020. He joins from Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP.
“The strategic growth of Miles & Stockbridge in the Richmond market has hit a number of key and exciting milestones,” said John Badman, IV, new managing principal of the Richmond office. “We are welcoming two lateral lawyers, Stephanie and Carl, with sophisticated and competitive practices. Their arrival is also perfectly timed with our move to our new space in the Riverfront Plaza West Tower. The space provides us with additional room to strategically, yet aggressively, hire in the region. While our clients are the ultimate beneficiaries of our growing presence in Richmond and addition of great talent, we are equally excited with the momentum that we have in the market.”
Badman was named managing principal of the Richmond office last month. A highly regarded corporate lawyer, he represents borrowers and lenders in secured and unsecured term, revolving and bridge loan facilities. He joined Miles & Stockbridge as a principal in August 2022 from McGuireWoods LLP.
“We are thrilled to have Stephanie and Carl on board,” said Nancy Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Miles & Stockbridge. “They will be fantastic, senior-level resources for our clients and they join at an exciting time for our firm. We see the opportunities in the market, and with our new hires, John Badman as the newly named office managing principal and Steve Ramaley as the national small business go-to in the growing government contracts space, we could not be more excited about our future. We are committed to growth in Richmond, and we have provided a unique platform for Stephanie and Carl to grow with us. We now have state-of-the-art office space to support our lawyers’ delivery of excellent service to clients which, along with our unique brand of blending ‘Big Law’ sophistication with a ‘small firm’ culture, makes us very attractive in our active recruiting efforts across the region. It is the right time to re-envision our presence in the Richmond market.”
