Miles & Stockbridge is pleased to announce that Shane M. Murphy, a deeply experienced real estate and zoning lawyer, joined the Tysons, Virginia, office of Miles & Stockbridge earlier this month as a principal in the firm’s Real Estate and Transactional Finance Practice Group and the Land Use and Zoning group within it.

“Shane has been instrumental in securing approvals for numerous complex and high-profile development projects throughout Northern Virginia,” said Nancy Greene, chairman, president and chief executive office of Miles & Stockbridge. “He will continue this work at Miles & Stockbridge and will help expand our land use practice in Virginia in close collaboration with our land use lawyers around the region.”

Murphy has secured complex land use approvals for clients throughout Virginia, while also successfully representing clients before trial and appellate courts. He has also played a key role in the establishment or relocation of corporate headquarters for many of Northern Virginia’s most successful businesses. His clients have included Fortune 500 companies, homebuilders, hospitals, retailers, public utilities, and institutional users.

In addition to his focus on real estate development and transactions, Murphy’s practice also includes general civil litigation, local government law, administrative law, and eminent domain. He often draws on his extensive background in public policy, having held key positions with elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels.

He earned his J.D. at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School and his bachelor’s degree from George Mason University.

Most recently, Murphy was a partner in the Tysons office of Reed Smith LLP. In August, Andrew Weiner, an insurance coverage litigator and advisor, also joined Miles & Stockbridge from the firm.

Growing Land Use Practice
A highly regarded land use group joined the firm’s Rockville, Maryland, office in March 2020. Principals Barbara A. Sears, Scott C. Wallace and Phillip A. Hummel specialize in land use, zoning and administrative law and represent landowners, developers and builders in real estate acquisition, development and construction matters involving planning, zoning, entitlements, permitting, and historic preservation. They also represent such clients before administrative boards and agencies, legislative bodies, and state and federal courts. At that time, they reunited with Erin Girard, an experienced land use and zoning lawyer who joined Miles & Stockbridge as a principal in 2019, and joined Casey Cirner and Noel Manalo, both of whom are principals with Miles & Stockbridge and knowledgeable land use and zoning lawyers.
