Highlights from Hot Topics in Health Care Law
Executives, general counsel and administrators of hospitals, physician groups, long-term care communities and other health care providers attended last week’s Hot Topics in Health Care Law seminar, presented by the Miles & Stockbridge Health Care Group. The event featured a panel discussion, moderated by Lisa Keenan and Molly Ferraioli, with three industry experts offering their thoughts on the rapidly evolving landscape of health care law:
- Cathy Hamel, president of Gilchrist Hospice, the largest provider of serious illness, hospice and palliative care services in Maryland, and executive vice president and chief strategy officer for GBMC HealthCare, a comprehensive system of care serving the Baltimore region
- Steve Leonard, president and CEO of TidalHealth, a robust health system across the Delmarva Peninsula offering patient-centered care
- Randy Sergent, executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the region’s largest not-for-profit provider of health benefits
Our panelists shared insights on enhancing the health care experience, workforce violence protection efforts, the introduction of artificial intelligence, the impact of private equity on health care and potential changes to the health care reimbursement system.
Celia Van Lenten then recapped the highs and lows of changes impacting the industry in 2024 with a detailed year-in-review of health care headlines. Celia discussed the financial pressures faced by health care providers, regulatory scrutiny of private equity investments in health care, and the fallout from the Change Healthcare ransomware attack. She also discussed the recent federal court decision to overturn the nursing home staffing mandate and the growing use of AI in the health care industry.
Leslie Cumber presented a timeline to track the executive orders implemented by the Trump administration in its first 80 days and how those executive orders are likely to impact the health care industry. For example, Leslie spoke about potential impacts to the cost of providing care resulting from tariffs and potential coverage losses in both marketplace plans and state Medicaid programs.
She also discussed the Make America Healthy Again Commission, as well as overall trends, such as the administration’s likelihood of increasing enforcement of hospital price transparency requirements.
Leslie concluded her presentation by recommending various actions that health care organizations can take now to help navigate this ever-shifting landscape.
If you were unable to attend this year’s event, we missed you!
